College Physics I and is designed for Science majors who are not in the
University Physics sequence. The course deals primarily with
Electricity and Magnetism, Waves and Optics, and Modern Physics topics.
Upon successful completion of this course students

* Describe electrostatic
interactions in terms of force, fields, energy and potential.

* Describe the magnetic
fields of simple geometries and their interactions with charged

* Define waves and their

geometric and wave optics to the phenomena of refraction,
reflection, interference and diffraction. Discuss the development of

courses and academic support to low-income and/or
first-generation-to-college
high school students from the Philadelphia
region.
WHEN:
Immediately – May 12, 2007, Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. –
1:30 p.m.
Perhaps also during a summer program, June
25 – July 27 2007,
with instruction on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Fridays.
If interested instruction can continue during
the Fall 2007 and forward.
WHERE: David Rittenhouse Laboratory Building,

PAY: The Science Instructor will be
paid for 5 hours of instructional time a
week and 2 hours of prep time a
week. Pay is $22.00 an hour.
CURRICULUM:
Science
instruction will focus on understanding earth science, biology, chemistry and
physics. Classroom instruction to be supplemented by hands-on experimentation
in a University laboratory, at which time students will be given practice in basic
laboratory procedures. Films will be
shown during the semester to enhance the lectures and there will be labs to
demonstrate concepts. At the end of the
term students should be able to: understand various theories on the order in
the universe and how we relate to it, understand weather patters and how they
relate to every day life, understand earthquakes – how and why they exist, what
causes them, and where they are likely to occur, understand photosynthesis in
plants, the various systems in animals (e.g., circulatory, endocrine systems),
and how the plant and animal kingdom relate to each other and how each relates
to their environment, understand the atom and its parts and scientific
notation, understand gravity, centrifugal force, and how these and other
elements of physics help us understand and relate to our environment. Participants will reinforce their English and technology skills by
writing lab reports, critically reviewing readings on science, and doing
research on the Internet.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree in
academic content area, masters preferred.
Three years teaching experience working with youth. Strong communication skills and flexibility
in dealing with students.

INFORMATION:
TRIO UB
students attend one of seven public schools in the Philadelphia area. They voluntarily apply and are selected to
participate in the program. The goal of
the program is to offer rigorous courses as well as academic support in an
effort to increase the rate at which low-income, first-generation-to-college
students enroll in college and graduate with a bachelor’s degree.
This is a temporary, part-time position,
however we are hopeful
that the individual selected for this
position can continue beyond one
semester as we offer Fall, Spring, and
Summer semesters.

Gwynedd Mercy College
There is
an immediate need for an adjunct physics instructor at Gwynedd Mercy
College. It is the second semester of an introductory physics course. It
is calculus-based with a lecture class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
8:30am to 9:45; one recitation class Thurs. from 12:30 to 1:20pm and lab
Thurs. from 1:30 to 4:30pm.
The class has only seven students who are mostly
majoring in biology and math.
